Mumfie's Quest is a lovely animated tale of an elephant who is tired of waiting for an adventure to come to him, so he sets off to make his own.  He meets some friends along the way, including a scarecrow, a flying piglet and a whale.  Their adventures take them to a mysterious island which is eerily quiet because singing, dancing, laughter and all other happy things are banned.  Here they must defeat the evil Secretary who has captured the magical princess.

The film was created by Britt Allcroft, who also brought us the Thomas and Friends TV series.  The simple style of animation is reminiscent of classic Winnie the Pooh and the story itself reminded me a little of the Wizard of Oz.

The Pickle particularly liked the part where the adventure takes the friends under the sea and they meet under-sea pirates.  I did find it amusing that they gave an explanation of Mumfie being able to breathe under water as he was a 'special' kind of elephant - just incase the children were to question it!

We watched this together as a family and while we all enjoyed the story, it did seem to go on a little too long for Mummy and Daddy, but The Princess and The Pickle were glued to the screen throughout.  It was very different to the modern style of animation and humour they would normally watch and it made a refreshing change.
